Harmonics Limited has been a leader in the field of harmonic mitigation since 1989, when Dr. Michael Z. Lowenstein solved the problem of third harmonic currents in computer systems. Multiple computers within a distribution system produce harmonic currents, primarily at the third harmonic. By the late 1980s, these harmonic currents were recognized as a culprit in transformer overheating and wire failures due to excessive neutral currents. Harmonic current problems in other industries were also recognized, such as motor-related problems due to three-phase variable frequency drives. At the time, the industry standard to reduce harmonic currents was to add shunt filters to the line. While shunt filters did manage to mitigate currents at the fifth and seventh harmonics, they could not effectively suppress third harmonic currents, which can be much more severe, and can even be greater than the current at the fundamental frequency.
